How we spend our money
The charity is managed by a team of volunteer Trustees and largely run by volunteer peer supporters.
We employ one part-time administrator/data collection officer and one part-time book keeper, who both work from home on a contract basis. The costs of these posts are approximately 10% of our spending.
50% of our spending goes to providing professional breastfeeding counsellors at every group, every week. The services of breastfeeding counsellors are invaluable to our groups. The counsellors hold a Diploma of Higher Education in Breastfeeding Counselling. Their extensive training and experience enables them to support families with a huge range of breastfeeding concerns.
Approximately 13% of our spending funds our training courses for new peer supporters. We aim to run regular sessions to train new peer supporters for each of our groups. The peer supporter training course is accredited by the Open College Network, giving mums who choose to train a valuable qualification. Once trained, our peer supporters often stay with us for several years, passing on their valuable experience to others who attend the groups.
Another 10% of spending is on items for resale at our groups. We sell a variety of feeding bras and pillows, cups and slings. These items are often hard to come by in high street shops so are a valued addition to our groups for mothers. We also make a very small profit from these items that can be reinvested to run our support groups.
8% of our budget is spent on room hire and 5% on providing resources at our groups. This mainly involves information leaflets and books for our libraries. Refreshments also make up a small part of this cost.
The remaining 4% of our costs include items such as our vital public liability insurance and our annual audit and accountancy fees.
